Subjects Offered in Whitesands School

Junior School – Following the Nigerian Curriculum for Basic Education, the Junior School students do the following subjects:

  • English Studies (Language and Literature)
  • Mathematics
  • French
  • Yoruba or Igbo
  • Basic Science & Technology (Made up of Basic Science, Basic Technology, Computer Studies, Physical & Health Education)
  • Christian Religious Studies (CRS)
  • National Values Education (Made up of Social Studies and Civic Education)
  • Pre-Vocational Studies
  • Cultural & Creative Arts (Made up of Visual Arts & Music)
  • History

All junior students are taught all the subjects on the list. However, students do either Igbo or Yoruba and not both.

Senior School – Students in the Senior School must register and sit for the SSCE examination in the following core subjects

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Civic Education
  • Data Processing

And, any 4 or 5 of the following electives

  • Agricultural Science
  • Biology
  • Christian Religious Knowledge
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Financial Accounting
  • French
  • Further Mathematics
  • Geography
  • Government
  • Literature-in-English
  • Physics
  • Technical Drawing
  • Visual Art

These electives are normally blocked, and each student is guided to choose the appropriate subject from each block based on his interest, aptitude, past record, and plan for his future career.

In addition, all senior students are expected to complete a course of study in Philosophical Anthropology to equip and introduce them to a broader view of the humanities not currently covered by any of the subjects listed above. This subject is examined at the school level.
